Patients suffering from Macular Degeneration are often frustrated at their lack of ability to live life independently like they once did. Visits to the grandkids, driving, and shopping are often too difficult. A common and effective treatment for Wet Macular Degeneration is Anti-VEGF. VEGF is an acronym for vascular endothelial growth factor. In a normal, healthy eye, VEGF is responsible for the formation of new blood vessels. In a Macular Degeneration patient, the VEGF is unhealthy, causing a rapid growth in blood vessels in the eyes, which in turn, causes bleeding. The purpose of the injection is to slow down this process.
The injection is typically administered by an Opthamologist about once a month. Studies have shown the shot to be effective. Some have concerns that it will have an effect on the vascular function of the body. However, we strongly believe in its effectiveness and would recommend our patients to look into receiving this treatment.
